THUNDER BAY, ON – A devastating fire at a homeless encampment near the Kam River has claimed one life and left two others injured, including a woman who sustained severe burns to 30% of her body and was airlifted to Toronto for emergency treatment.
Fire Marshal Investigating Cause
The fire broke out in the encampment area on Simpson Street early Wednesday morning. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the scene around 4 a.m., where they discovered a tent fully engulfed in flames.
“The Office of the Fire Marshal remains on-site conducting an investigation to determine the cause, origin, and circumstances of the fire. However, no cause has been determined at this time,” stated a spokesperson for the Fire Marshal’s Office.
One Confirmed Fatality
Authorities have confirmed that one person has died, while two others suffered injuries in the blaze. The female victim, who sustained serious burns, was medically evacuated to Toronto for specialized treatment.
Initially it was reported only two persons were injured.
