Hold Onto Your Toque—Thunder Bay’s Weather Is About to Take a Wintery Turn!

Snow Squalls and Blustery Winds Lead the Day

Thunder Bay starts the day under partly cloudy skies and gusty west winds. Currently, it’s -1°C, but those winds, blowing at 31 km/h with gusts up to 54 km/h, make it feel much colder, with a wind chill of -8°C.

Humidity sits at a dry 58%, while the barometric pressure is falling at 99.2 kPa—an indicator of the incoming active weather system.

The morning begins with a 30% chance of flurries, ramping up to steady snowfall late this morning. Snow squalls are expected early this afternoon, potentially creating brief periods of near-zero visibility.

Combined with strong winds gusting up to 60 km/h, blowing snow will make for hazardous driving conditions. While snowfall accumulation will be light at around 2 cm, the impact on visibility will be significant.

Temperatures will hover near the freezing mark this morning before falling sharply to -9°C by the afternoon. Factor in the biting winds, and it will feel like -14°C later in the day. Bundle up, Thunder Bay—winter is flexing its muscles today!

Tonight: The Deep Freeze Arrives

As flurries diminish and skies clear overnight, the temperature will plunge to a frigid low of -20°C. Winds will ease, becoming light by the evening, but the wind chill will remain fierce, making it feel like -25°C overnight.

Frostbite becomes a real risk in these conditions, so limit your time outdoors and dress warmly if you must head out.

Tuesday: Snow Takes the Spotlight

Tuesday will start off cloudy, with snow beginning early in the morning and continuing throughout the day. Accumulations of 5 to 10 cm are expected, making it the snowiest day of the week. Winds will remain relatively calm at up to 15 km/h, but the cold will persist, with a high of -4°C.

The wind chill, however, will make it feel like a frosty -28°C in the morning, easing slightly to -9°C by the afternoon. Frostbite risks remain high, so plan to stay indoors when possible.

Tuesday night will bring a 60% chance of flurries and a low of -9°C.

Midweek Outlook: Sun Returns, but the Chill Holds

Wednesday will offer a mix of sun and cloud, giving Thunder Bay a welcome break from the snow. Temperatures will remain cold, with a high of -5°C and a low of -12°C overnight, along with a 40% chance of flurries.

By Thursday, milder conditions will begin to creep in, with a high of -1°C under partly sunny skies. However, overnight lows will drop to -12°C, so the region won’t escape winter’s icy grip just yet.

Historical Weather Trivia

On this day in Thunder Bay’s weather history, the warmest January 27 reached +4.6°C in 1989, a delightful break from the usual chill. The coldest January 27, however, plunged to an extreme -39.4°C in 1966. Today’s expected low of -20°C may seem harsh, but it pales in comparison to that historical Arctic blast!

Wardrobe Wisdom

If you’re heading out today, gear up for the cold and wind. A warm, windproof parka, insulated gloves, and a snug toque are essential to keep you comfortable. A scarf or neck warmer will help protect against the biting wind chill, especially as temperatures drop this afternoon. Tonight’s conditions demand heavy-duty winter layers if you’re venturing outside, as frostbite can occur quickly when the wind chill reaches -25°C.
