THUNDER BAY – A chaotic incident at a local business on Memorial Avenue led to multiple assaults and the arrest of a female suspect. Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) officers responded to the disturbance on Monday, January 20, 2025, at approximately 11:15 a.m.

Reports indicated that the suspect, a 35-year-old woman, entered a business in the 400 block of Memorial Avenue and assaulted staff and customers while damaging equipment on-site. During her arrest, the suspect also assaulted a responding officer.

Charges Laid Under the Criminal Code

Chantal Blackhawk, 35, faces the following charges under the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Assault with a Weapon
    • Penalty upon conviction: Up to 10 years imprisonment, reflecting the severity of weapon-related offenses.
  • Assault x4
    • Penalty upon conviction: Up to 5 years imprisonment for each count, underscoring the gravity of physical harm or threats inflicted upon others.
  • Assault Peace Officer
    • Penalty upon conviction: Up to 5 years imprisonment. This charge emphasizes the need to protect law enforcement personnel performing their duties.
  • Uttering Threats
    • Penalty upon conviction: Up to 5 years imprisonment, applicable when verbal or written threats are made to harm individuals or property.
  • Mischief Under $5,000
    • Penalty upon conviction: Up to 2 years imprisonment or a fine, depending on the case’s circumstances.

The accused appeared in court on Tuesday and has been remanded into custody, pending a future court appearance.
