Light Snow Blankets Kenora Tonight

Kenora and the Lake of the Woods region are feeling the icy embrace of winter tonight as light snow graces the area. As of 10:08 PM CST, the temperature at Kenora Airport sits at -1°C, but don’t let that fool you—northwest winds blowing at 21 km/h, with gusts up to 39 km/h, are creating a wind chill that feels more like -7°C. Humidity is high at 91%, adding to the frosty atmosphere, and visibility is reduced to 5 km due to the snowfall. On the bright side, the barometric pressure is rising at 100.6 kPa, indicating potential clearing in the future.

Thursday, January 16: Gusty Winds and Falling Temperatures

Thursday will be a day to hunker down, as the region sees cloudy skies and more flurries. Northwest winds will remain strong, reaching speeds of 30 km/h and gusting up to 50 km/h in the morning. The high for the day will be -3°C, but temperatures will steadily drop to -8°C by late afternoon. The wind chill will make it feel like a biting -14°C in the morning, only slightly easing to -12°C in the afternoon.

Thursday evening will bring cloudy skies with the chance of flurries continuing at 30%. Winds will calm to light later in the night as temperatures plummet to a low of -15°C, and the wind chill drops even further to a frosty -20°C. Make sure your winter gear is ready to brave the cold!

Friday, January 17: A Mixed Bag of Snow and Clouds

Friday starts off with periods of snow in the morning but will transition to a mix of clouds later in the day. A high of -7°C is expected, providing some respite from Thursday’s chill. By evening, however, the region will see the mercury dip sharply to a bitter -25°C, reminding everyone that we’re firmly in January’s icy grip.

Saturday, January 18: Clear Skies and Bitter Cold

Saturday will feature clear and sunny skies, but it will be frigid all day. The high is forecast to reach only -20°C, with overnight lows plunging to an arctic -31°C. If you’re planning any outdoor activities, be sure to prepare for extreme cold—frostbite risks will be high in such temperatures.

Historic Highs and Lows

For January 15, Kenora’s record high temperature was an unseasonably warm 6.2°C, set in 1981. On the flip side, the record low was a bone-chilling -37.8°C, recorded back in 1972. Tonight’s low of -1°C might feel cold, but it’s far from historic extremes.

What to Wear

Layers, layers, and more layers are the key to staying warm in Kenora this week! Tonight and Thursday’s wind chills of -12°C to -14°C call for a heavy winter coat, insulated boots, gloves, and a toque. If you’re heading out Friday night or Saturday morning, grab your thickest scarf and consider thermal gear—it’s going to feel downright arctic.
