Rainfall Warning Issued for Sudbury Region

Sudbury’s weather today is a mix of mild temperatures and heavy precipitation, thanks to a low-pressure system set to arrive this afternoon. A Rainfall Warning is in effect, forecasting 20 to 30 mm of rain combined with melting snow. With the frozen ground struggling to absorb this moisture, there’s a risk of flash flooding and water pooling, especially in low-lying areas.

Currently, Sudbury is at 2°C with mist blanketing the region. The air is saturated with 99% humidity, while the barometric pressure, sitting at 101.4 kPa, is rising slightly. Winds are light from the southwest at 10 km/h, offering little resistance to the damp chill.

Today: Rain Moves In

The day starts with cloudy skies and a 30% chance of early morning drizzle. Fog patches, which are reducing visibility for early risers, will dissipate near noon. Rain will arrive late this afternoon, and winds will shift to a light southwest breeze before calming later in the morning. Temperatures will climb to a high of 4°C, so waterproof gear will be essential for any outdoor plans.

Tonight: Rain Turning to Snow

As night falls, rain will intensify, with 10 to 20 mm expected before tapering into a rain-snow mix after midnight. Temperatures will dip to 0°C, and winds will shift to the northeast at 20 km/h, adding a brisk edge to the wet conditions.

Monday: A Slushy Transition

Periods of rain or snow will continue through Monday, bringing an additional 5 mm of precipitation. Gusty northwest winds up to 40 km/h will make the high of 2°C feel chillier. By night, the chance of flurries or rain showers persists as temperatures drop to -2°C.

Outlook: A Snowy End to the Year

Tuesday and Wednesday remain cloudy with chances of flurries or light rain, and daytime highs hovering near freezing. By Thursday, temperatures will drop further, with daytime highs of -7°C and overnight lows plunging to -13°C. Get ready to pull out those heavier coats as Sudbury heads into a frosty start to 2025.

Historical Weather Trivia

On December 29, Sudbury’s warmest recorded high was a mild 8.9°C in 1984, while the record low plummeted to -38.3°C in 1933. Today’s 2°C feels tame in comparison to those extremes!
