THUNDER BAY – A Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision has left one person dead. A collision between a transport and a car has left the driver deceased.

The driver of the commercial motor vehicle involved in the collision did not report any injuries.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team, alongside OPP Collision Reconstructionists, continue to investigate the incident. As such, the highway remains closed, with no indication of when it will reopen.

The OPP emphasizes that investigations into fatal motor vehicle collisions require thoroughness, often resulting in extended highway closures.

Safety Reminders for Winter Travel

In light of the dangerous road conditions, the OPP is urging motorists to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. For those who must be on the road, police recommend:

  • Drive cautiously and adjust speed to match winter conditions.
  • Ensure vehicles are winter-ready with snow tires, adequate windshield washer fluid, and a full gas tank.
  • Pack emergency items such as blankets, food, and water.
  • Stay connected by checking in with family or friends when traveling.

The OPP’s advice serves as a reminder to prioritize safety during winter travel and reduce risks for all road users.
