Health Canada Warns of Choking Risk from Recalled Stuffed Toys

As Canadians enjoy holiday celebrations with gift exchanges and festive feasts, Health Canada has issued a warning about a potential choking hazard linked to several stuffed toys for children.

On Christmas Eve, the agency announced a recall of 120 units of “Mother and Baby” plush toys sold by Toronto-based Chantia Sales. The recall covers elephant, giraffe, lion, tiger, and panda plush toys featuring both parent and baby versions.

Manufactured in China, these toys were sold in Canada between May 2023 and December 2024. Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program determined that the toys failed to comply with regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.

“The hard plastic eyes can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children,” the agency stated.

As of December 16, no injuries or incidents had been reported to Chantia Sales, according to Health Canada.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled toys immediately and return them for a refund. The affected products bear item number P273585 and UPC code 8140239986.

Interestingly, children’s toys, including plush toys and accessories, are part of a federal government two-month “tax holiday” that began on December 14.
