THUNDER BAY, ON – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews responded to a residential structural fire on Vickers Street North shortly after 5:00 PM. Visible smoke and flames were observed from across the street, prompting a full response and a second alarm as the free-venting fire rapidly grew.
Swift Action Saves Lives and Limits Damage
The first arriving unit quickly confirmed with the resident that no one was inside the apartment, but their dog remained trapped. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack on the blaze, bringing it under control in a short time.
During a primary search of the unit, crews located the dog and transferred it to Superior North EMS, where paramedics administered respiratory care for smoke inhalation. The dog’s condition improved significantly.
Additional searches of the building revealed that the other two units were unoccupied at the time. Thanks to the rapid arrival and action of firefighters, damage to the home was contained to the apartment, which sustained fire and smoke damage.
Investigation Points to Heating Unit
Preliminary findings suggest that bedding placed too close to a heating unit may have sparked the fire, but the incident remains under investigation.
Extensive Emergency Response
A total of 6 pumpers, a command unit, and an aerial ladder responded to the scene. The coordinated efforts of multiple fire crews were critical to minimizing damage and ensuring everyone’s safety.
Reminder: Smoke Alarms Save Lives
TBFR is using this incident to remind the public of the importance of working smoke alarms in every home. Properly installed and maintained alarms are a proven lifesaver during house fires.
