Historical Homicide Solved After 26 Years with DNA Technology
Winnipeg – NEWS – The Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU) has extradited a 60-year-old Winnipeg resident, Robert Allen Creter, to the United States in connection with a decades-old homicide. Creter faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of a 23-year-old woman in Bridgewater, New Jersey, in 1997.
The Crime and Breakthrough in Investigation
In 1997, the victim was found deceased in Washington Valley Park, New Jersey. For years, the case remained unsolved despite exhaustive efforts by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office. A major breakthrough came in April 2023, when DNA evidence was resubmitted to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), yielding a match to Robert Allen Creter.
Creter’s Arrest in Winnipeg
Having resided in Winnipeg for nearly two decades, Creter was apprehended by MIVOAU in June 2024. Following his arrest, extradition proceedings ensured his return to the U.S.
Extradition Completed
On November 26, 2024, Creter was escorted by MIVOAU investigators to the James Richardson International Airport, where he was handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service to face trial in New Jersey.
