ORILLIA, ON – A powerful snowstorm has slammed the Central Region, leaving Highway 11 closed and many motorists stranded. Ontario Provincial Police are pleading with the public to stay off the roads.

“Additional vehicles on the roads put occupants at risk and add further challenges for snow removal,” warns the OPP.

Highway 11 remains closed in both directions between Highway 60 in Huntsville and West Street in Orillia, with other sections also impacted. Many secondary roads are impassable or treacherous.

GPS Leading Drivers Astray

Adding to the chaos, GPS systems are directing drivers onto closed or dangerous roads like Cooper’s Falls Road and Houseys Rapids Road, where numerous vehicles are now stuck.

“Your GPS may not provide accurate directions in this situation,” cautions the OPP.

Emergency Crews Respond

Snow removal crews are working tirelessly, but the heavy snowfall continues to create hazardous conditions. OPP officers, paramedics, and firefighters are using snowmobiles and off-road vehicles to reach stranded motorists.

Stay Put and Stay Safe

If you are stranded, the OPP advises:

  • Stay with your vehicle: Do not venture out on foot, as you could become lost or encounter dangers from snow removal equipment.
  • Conserve fuel: If you are running low on fuel, find a safe place to park until conditions improve or help arrives.
  • Call for help if needed: For life-threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Be patient, as communication centres are experiencing high call volumes.

Truckers Take Note:

Tractor trailers are advised to use Highway 35 and Highway 400 as alternate routes.
