Over the course of the winter being prepared for long traffic delays has become all too common in our region. Serious collisions can close the highway for hours. Having ways to stay safe and comfortable is key.
That means having a well-stocked vehicle safety kit is essential for every driver.
Don’t get caught off guard! Here’s a checklist of must-have items to keep in your vehicle throughout the winter months:
For Warmth and Safety:
- Warm Clothing: Pack extra layers of clothing, including hats, mittens, scarves, and warm socks, in case you get stranded or need to walk for help.
- Blankets: Keep a few warm blankets or a sleeping bag in your vehicle for extra warmth.
- Hand and Foot Warmers: These small packets can provide much-needed warmth in an emergency.
- First-Aid Kit: A well-stocked first-aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries.
- Flashlight with Extra Batteries: A reliable flashlight is crucial for visibility in low-light conditions or during power outages.
- Candles and Matches/Lighter: These can provide light and some warmth if you’re stranded. (Use with caution and proper ventilation.)

For Vehicle Maintenance and Emergency Situations:

- Shovel: A small shovel can help you dig your vehicle out of snow if you get stuck.
- Booster Cables: Essential for jump-starting your vehicle if the battery dies.
- Tow Rope: A tow rope can be a lifesaver if you need to be pulled out of a ditch or snowbank.

For the kids!
If you are stuck in traffic with the kids, many parts of the region do not have cellular phone service, having some books, games, and having a plan of activities for in the car is important.
