THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay man has been charged with second-degree murder following an assault at the Thunder Bay District Jail last month that resulted in the death of a fellow inmate.
The assault occurred on the evening of Friday, October 25, at the Thunder Bay District Jail. The victim, an adult male, sustained serious injuries deemed life-threatening and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, November 20.
Charge and Investigation
Following the victim’s death, the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation. On Thursday, November 21, police arrested and charged 31-year-old Travis Jacob LOON, of Thunder Bay, with second-degree murder.
Second-degree murder is defined under the Criminal Code of Canada as an intentional killing that is not premeditated. The charge carries significant legal weight, and if convicted, it can result in a mandatory life sentence.
Presumption of Innocence
It is important to note that under Canadian law, all accused individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The legal process will determine the outcome of the charge against Mr. Loon.
The case is now before the courts, and further details may emerge as the judicial process unfolds.
