York University has officially opened its new Markham Campus, marking a significant milestone as the first new university campus established in York Region. The grand opening ceremony, attended by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton, and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, highlighted the strategic importance of this development for students and the local economy.

“Serving our students and meeting the needs of employers in York Region and beyond with best-in-class educational experiences and work-integrated learning opportunities is our goal,” Lenton stated.

The Markham Campus provides York University students with flexible educational spaces, smaller class sizes, and the latest technology and equipment. The campus is designed to meet the demands of both students and employers in the region, offering myriad opportunities for workplace experiential education.

“With the first full cohort of students enrolled this fall, we have turned our focus to support their academic needs and professional ambitions – to set them up for a lifetime of success,” Lenton continued.

The new campus is strategically located near five provincially significant employment zones and aligns with York Region’s economic and workforce development plans. The region is expected to generate 15,000 new jobs annually through 2030, with the Markham Campus contributing to the local talent pipeline. The academic programs at the campus will align with the evolving skills required by Ontario businesses, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the job market.

Premier Doug Ford praised the campus for its potential impact on the province’s economic future. “York University’s new Markham campus is a tremendous addition to York Region and all of Ontario,” Ford remarked. “This campus will equip students with the skills needed to succeed in today’s economy while supporting the growth of local industries and creating new opportunities right here in Markham. Our government is proud to support this investment in education and innovation, which will drive economic growth and help build Ontario’s workforce of the future.”

York University has been expanding its influence in the region, with initiatives such as YSpace, an innovation hub in Markham that supports emerging entrepreneurs. The establishment of the new campus faced various challenges, including disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain issues. Nonetheless, the campus, situated in downtown Markham near the Pan Am Centre, GO transit, and the YMCA, has already garnered substantial interest from prospective students. York Region is projected to have the highest growth rate in Ontario among the 18-22 age group, increasing by 34 percent by 2041.

The development of the Markham Campus was made possible through substantial financial backing from York Region, a land donation from the City of Markham, and operational funding from the Ontario government, along with generous contributions from private donors and philanthropists. The collaborative effort underscores a community-wide commitment to education and innovation.

President Lenton expressed her gratitude for the community support. “I am thrilled to be here with so many who have been with us on this journey, as supporters, friends, and advocates. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us achieve this incredible vision for our innovative new campus.”

The new Markham Campus is expected to play a vital role in shaping the educational and economic landscape of York Region for years to come.
