THUNDER BAY – LIVING = In anticipation of the winter season, the City of Thunder Bay’s is announcing that bike lanes will be “closed” from November 15 to April 30.
During this period, riders are still permitted to use bike lanes and roadways but are to be aware that during the winter months, bike lanes will not be cleared of debris and may be used for snow storage as necessary.
All riders choosing to use bike lanes and roadways during the winter are advised to exercise caution with changing road conditions and reduced visibility.
“As the days get shorter, we encourage riders to use lights and wear reflective clothing to be visible, and to use hand signals to communicate to drivers” said Matthew Lawrence, Mobility Coordinator. “We also ask drivers to slow down, clear their windows for visibility, watch for riders and avoid driving in the bike lanes.”
Some locations where bike lane parking is restricted may have those restrictions lifted to allow for on-street parking. It is recommended that drivers check area signage to confirm parking is permitted.
It is anticipated the bike lanes will re-open on May 1, 2025 –dependent on weather conditions allowing for winter debris to be cleared from the right of way.
