THUNDER BAY, ON – City crews are working to resolve a sewer overflow at the intersection of Arthur and James Streets after a blockage was discovered on Friday, November 1, 2024.

Cause of the Overflow

During an investigation into reports of a strong odour in the area, city crews identified an undocumented maintenance hole connected to a combined sewer overflow. The overflow was traced back to a grease blockage in the sanitary sewer on Arthur Street, which allowed sewage to enter a nearby storm sewer and flow towards the Neebing River.

Cleanup and Inspection Efforts

Since the discovery, City crews and contractors have been working diligently to clean and inspect the impacted sewer systems. They are focused on removing any sewage and debris from the affected areas, including the storm sewer outfall at the Neebing River, before placing the storm sewer back in service.

Ongoing Monitoring and Environmental Coordination

To ensure public and environmental safety, water quality near the Neebing River storm outfall by Riverview Drive is being monitored closely throughout the cleanup process. The incident was promptly reported to Ontario’s Spills Action Centre. The Ministry of the Environment, Thunder Bay District Health Unit, and Lakehead Region Conservation Authority are all being kept informed of the progress.
