Thunder Bay – Wildfire Update – October 31 marks the close of Ontario’s 2024 fire season.

Since the last update on October 28, no new wildland fires have been confirmed in the Northwest Region, where two fires remain active—one is under control, and the other is not yet contained.

Current Fire Hazard and Active Fires in the Northwest Region

  • Fire Status: Two active fires; one controlled and one uncontrolled.
  • Hazard Level: Low to moderate across the Northwest Region.

Residents are encouraged to check Ontario’s interactive fire map for the latest wildland fire danger ratings in their specific areas.

Reminder for Safe Outdoor Burning as Season Concludes

As we exit the fire season, Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services advises caution with outdoor burning. Alternative methods, such as composting or local landfill disposal, are preferred to reduce risk. If burning is essential, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Timing: Fires may be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset and must be extinguished two hours after sunrise.
  • Preparation: Keep sufficient water and tools at the site and fully extinguish fires before leaving.
