BANFF – WEATHER – A Snowfall Warning is currently in effect for Banff National Park and the surrounding areas in Western Alberta. Snowfall, sometimes heavy, is expected to continue throughout the evening and taper off overnight.

The region is likely to see between 10 to 15 cm of snow, with localized areas in higher terrain potentially experiencing upwards of 25 cm.

This kind of weather is fairly common in the foothills and Rocky Mountains at this time of year. Area ski resorts like Sunshine Village and Lake Louise count on this kind of weather to start preparing for the winter ski season. So while it might be hard on the drivers, the resorts consider these conditions as worthwhile and valuable.

Today’s Weather Overview:

Current Conditions:

As of 5:21 PM MDT, snow is falling steadily across Banff National Park and Western Alberta. The temperature hovers around freezing, with snow accumulating on cooler surfaces while some melting occurs on warmer ground. Winds are light but may pick up at higher altitudes. Visibility has been reduced significantly due to heavy snowfall in some areas, leading to deteriorating travel conditions.

Tomorrow’s Forecast:

Expected Conditions:

By tomorrow morning, the snowfall will have tapered off, leaving behind cloudy skies with a chance of light flurries. Temperatures will range from -2°C to 2°C. Winds will shift from the southwest, blowing at 15 to 20 km/h, and the barometric pressure is expected to rise, signaling clearing conditions by the afternoon. However, roads could remain icy, especially in shaded or elevated areas.

  • Tuesday, October 22: Overcast with occasional light snow flurries. High of 2°C, low of -4°C.
  • Wednesday, October 23: Partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of snow. High of 4°C, low of -1°C.
  • Thursday, October 24: Clearer skies with a warming trend. High of 6°C, low of -2°C.

Wardrobe Recommendations:

As snow continues to fall and temperatures stay chilly, it’s essential to dress warmly. Insulated winter coats, waterproof boots, gloves, and hats are recommended to stay dry and warm. For those heading out early, layering clothing will help adapt to the fluctuating temperatures, especially as snow gives way to milder conditions later in the week. If you’re driving, ensure you’re prepared with winter gear to stay safe in case of unexpected delays.

Alberta RCMP Road Update

With the seasons changing, some parts of the province are already experiencing winter weather. Please take extra precautions when traveling, or consider avoiding travel when conditions include icy roads and blowing snow.

Before you hit the highways this winter, remember the following:

  • Remove all snow from your vehicle before each trip to improve visibility
  • Allow yourself extra travel time in poor weather
  • Ensure your headlights are working and always on
  • Increase your following and breaking distance on icy roads
  • Travel with a fully charged cell phone for emergency situations
  • Slow down and drive to conditions. You can be charged with a traffic offence for driving too fast for the conditions.

The Alberta RCMP recommends checking road reports at 511.alberta.ca before traveling on Alberta highways as conditions can change quickly. For more traffic safety information, follow us on Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and X @RCMPAlberta.

Weather Trivia:

Did you know that Banff holds a reputation for early snowfall due to its altitude? The first significant snow often arrives in October, making it a favorite destination for winter sports enthusiasts gearing up for ski season. Higher elevations, like those in the surrounding mountain ranges, are particularly prone to receiving heavy snowfalls well before other parts of Alberta.
