Webequie First Nation, ON – A Webequie man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a violent altercation on Saturday, October 19th.
Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) officers responded to a call in the early morning hours regarding a serious assault on School Road. Their investigation revealed a male and female, known to each other, were involved in a physical altercation that resulted in the female sustaining serious injuries consistent with a stabbing.
The victim was initially treated at the community nursing station before being transported to Thunder Bay for further medical attention. The extent of her injuries remains unknown at this time.
The accused, 26-year-old Bryton Jermaine Dante QUISSES, was apprehended later that evening. He faces several charges, including:
- Attempt to Commit Murder: This charge, under Section 239 of the Criminal Code of Canada, carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The Crown must prove that the accused intended to kill the victim and took steps towards that goal.
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose: This charge, under Section 88 of the Criminal Code, relates to possessing a weapon with the intent to use it in a way that could endanger another person’s safety. Penalties vary depending on the weapon and the specific circumstances.
- Failure to Comply with Release Order x 4: This indicates the accused was under previous court orders and allegedly violated those conditions.
QUISSES appeared in bail court on Sunday, October 20th, and was remanded into custody pending a future court appearance. The NAPS Crime Unit is actively investigating the incident.
