THUNDER BAY – October 17, 2024 A recent tenant satisfaction survey conducted by the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB) has revealed both positive developments and ongoing concerns for residents living in district housing. While improvements in snow removal and summer maintenance were noted, issues surrounding safety and cleanliness remain prevalent.

Positive Trends Highlighted in Survey

Improved Snow Removal and Maintenance:
Tenants reported a significant drop in negative responses regarding snow removal and summer maintenance services compared to the 2022 survey. Residents of apartment buildings, in particular, expressed high satisfaction with these services, indicating that TBDSSAB has made strides in addressing these key concerns.

Positive Staff Interactions:
The survey showed increased satisfaction with interactions between tenants and TBDSSAB staff, reflecting stronger engagement and better rapport in recent months. This suggests that efforts to improve communication and responsiveness have been well-received by the residents.

Community Activities:
There was also a notable rise in satisfaction with the number of activities available to residents. This points to TBDSSAB’s commitment to fostering community engagement and providing opportunities for social interaction among tenants.

Concerns Over Cleanliness, Garbage, and Safety

Cleanliness and Garbage Disposal:
Despite the positive feedback in some areas, concerns about cleanliness within buildings have grown. The majority of complaints came from residents in apartment buildings, with garbage disposal issues being a significant point of dissatisfaction, particularly for those living in townhouse units.

Safety and Security Issues:
The most concerning finding from the survey was a significant increase in tenants reporting feelings of insecurity in their homes and neighbourhoods. Many cited issues such as drug and alcohol activity, crime, violence, and unauthorized individuals entering the buildings. This indicates a growing safety problem that needs immediate attention.

There have been reports of properties with the tenants fearing for their safety. This especially in what were buildings formerly reserved for seniors. Over the course of the past year there have been protests, and numerous times police have responded to properties to deal with criminal activities. It is hoped that the survey results will generate positive change and improved safety.

TBDSSAB Addresses Concerns

Newly appointed TBDSSAB CEO Ken Ranta, the former housing/property manager acknowledged the feedback from tenants and emphasized the importance of addressing safety concerns. “The safety of our tenants is a priority,” Ranta said. “We are committed to implementing measures that will have a positive impact on our residents’ security and well-being.”
