Thunder Bay – As of October 11, 2024, no new wildland fires have been confirmed in the Northwest Region, but residents are urged to stay cautious over the long weekend due to an elevated fire hazard.

Currently, there are 12 active wildland fires in the region, with three under control and nine being monitored. The fire hazard remains moderate to high across most areas, especially in the Thunder Bay Fire Management Sector. However, the eastern half of the Greenstone Fire Management Sector continues to report a low fire hazard.

Thanksgiving Weekend Fire Safety Tips: With the elevated fire hazard this weekend, here are some important safety precautions:

  • Outdoor Fires: Keep fires small and fully extinguished before leaving. Have water nearby.
  • ATV Use: Fasten loose chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and keep machines clean to prevent sparks.
  • Hunting Awareness: Be mindful of FireRangers in forested areas—check surroundings before discharging firearms.
  • Yardwork: Use composting or yard waste disposal options instead of burning. If burning is necessary, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.

Reminders:

  • Fires should be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and extinguished two hours after sunrise.
  • If you cause a wildland fire, you may be held responsible for the costs of firefighting.

To report a wildland fire, call 310-FIRE (310-3473).
