Challenges Met by Firefighters over Busy Night

Thunder Bay, ON – October 7, 2024 – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews faced a challenging night on October 6th and into the morning of the 7th, responding to multiple incidents that stretched the department’s resources.

The busy period began with numerous calls for downed power lines and trees falling on wires throughout the city. These incidents caused damage and posed a risk to public safety. TBFR worked alongside Synergy North to address these hazards and ensure the safety of residents.

Vehicle Fire in the East End

Around midnight, firefighters responded to a possible structural fire in the city’s east end. Fortunately, the fire was contained to a vehicle and quickly extinguished before it could spread to nearby buildings.

Mattress Fire and Rescue in County Park

Near daybreak, TBFR was called to a structural fire in the County Park area. The first crew on scene encountered smoke conditions and learned that one occupant was still inside the building. Firefighters quickly entered the smoke-filled structure and rescued the individual.

The fire, which originated from a mattress, was brought under control. Superior North EMS paramedics attended to the occupant, who was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Safety Reminders from TBFR

Following this series of incidents, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue issued important safety reminders to the public:

• Ensure working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and functioning properly in your home.
• In the event of a fire, ensure all occupants evacuate the building immediately.
• Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to 911.
