CAT LAKE, ON – Two suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with a July arson that resulted in the destruction of approximately $500,000 worth of home-building materials in Cat Lake First Nation.
On July 14, 2024, officers from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS), stationed in Cat Lake, responded to a call about a fire in the 100 block of Back Road.
Upon arrival, police discovered a warehouse fully engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts, along with assistance from contractors, the blaze consumed a large stockpile of building materials intended for ongoing home construction projects.
The materials, valued at around $500,000, were crucial for addressing housing shortages within the community.
Following an extensive investigation by the NAPS Criminal Investigations Unit, the fire was determined to be an act of arson.
On October 2, 2024, police arrested two suspects in connection with the fire. A 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl, both from Cat Lake First Nation, have been charged with Arson – Damage to Property. In compliance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of both suspects are being withheld.
Both individuals have been released with conditions and are scheduled to appear in court on future dates.
