Fire Activity and Caution Urged Across the Region
As of the evening of October 1, 2024, two new wildfires have been confirmed in Ontario’s Northeast Region. Wawa 16, spanning 1.3 hectares, was identified this morning just north of Lorna Lake. Meanwhile, Cochrane 45 remains under observation at 840 hectares near the Ekwan River in the Far North.
Currently, there are 15 active wildfires across the region, with varying degrees of control. Residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution as fire hazards remain moderate to high in parts of the Cochrane sector.
Key Fire Updates:
- Wawa 16: Covers 1.3 hectares, located 1 km north of Lorna Lake, 20 km west of Highway 614. One FireRanger crew is on site.
- Cochrane 45: Under observation, spanning 840 hectares, 8 km west of the Ekwan River, and 30 km southwest of Opinnagau Lake.
Fire Hazard Overview:
- 15 active fires in total: 3 under control, 1 uncontrolled, and 11 being monitored.
- Fire hazard is primarily low to moderate but is moderate to high in the northern half of the Cochrane sector.
Safety Reminders:
- Outdoor Burning Regulations: Follow Ontario’s burning guidelines, burn safely, and within the allowed timeframe—two hours before sunset to two hours after sunrise.
- No Drone Zone: Flying drones near forest fires is illegal and dangerous.
- Waterbomber Safety: Watercraft should stay clear of waterbombers collecting water to avoid obstructing firefighting operations.
