WINNIPEG – NEWS – In August 2024, Winnipeg Police Service’s Guns & Gangs Unit launched an investigation into a criminal network suspected of trafficking cocaine in Winnipeg and northern First Nations communities.
On September 19, the investigation led to a traffic stop at St. Mary’s Road and Hull Avenue, resulting in the arrest of three men. The following items were seized during the operation:
- 834 grams of individually packaged cocaine
- 66 grams of additional cocaine
- $1,965 in Canadian currency
- Two vehicles
- Drug packaging and trafficking materials
- Stolen identification
- Airline tickets and luggage
The arrested individuals are:
- Ahmed Abdi Bashir, 26, of Winnipeg
- Bego Mahmutovic, 24, of Vita, Manitoba
- Reid David Asals, 27, of Penticton, British Columbia
The cocaine had an estimated street value of $70,000, with the drugs believed to be intended for northern First Nations communities. Investigators suggest the trafficking network operates interprovincially, with plans to transport the drugs by air.
