THUNDER BAY, ON – A 17-year-old male is facing multiple charges after leading Thunder Bay Police on a dangerous chase in the early hours of September 18. Officers first responded to erratic driving reports involving a motorized bike at George Burke Park.
The suspect later fled from officers and collided with a police cruiser before attempting to flee on foot.
The youth faces charges of Dangerous Operation (x3), Flight from a Peace Officer, Failure to Remain, and Impaired Operation. Due to his age, the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) protects his identity, ensuring his privacy as a minor.
Under the YCJA, individuals under 18 are subject to different sentencing guidelines and protections aimed at rehabilitation rather than punishment.
For example, young offenders face less severe penalties compared to adults, with a focus on community-based solutions, unless involved in particularly violent offenses.
The youth, who was under a 90-day license suspension, has been remanded into custody following his court appearance.
