Police Arrest Suspect Following Back-to-Back Weapons Incidents

Thunder Bay – A suspect faces multiple charges following two armed robberies at local hotels earlier this week. Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to separate incidents at hotels on Harbour Expressway and Cumberland Street North, where a male suspect brandished a weapon and threatened staff.

The first incident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on Monday, September 2, at a hotel on the 500 block of Harbour Expressway. The suspect entered the business, threatened an employee with a weapon, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The second incident took place one night later, on Tuesday, September 3, just before 11:30 p.m., at a hotel on the 0-100 block of Cumberland Street North. The suspect once again brandished a weapon and threatened a staff member before fleeing the scene.

The Thunder Bay Police’s Break and Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit took over the investigations, quickly determining that the same individual was responsible for both robberies.

On Wednesday, September 4, police arrested 41-year-old Garry MATTHEWS in connection with the incidents.

Charges Against Garry MATTHEWS:

  • Robbery with Violence (2 counts)
  • Failure to Comply with a Release Order (6 counts)
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Resisting a Peace Officer

Matthews appeared in court on Thursday, September 5, and remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
