SAULT STE Marie – Wildfire Update – Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services confirmed one new wildland fire in the Northeast Region after the evening report on Friday, August 31:
- Sudbury 33 (SUD033): Located near Matagamasi Lake Road, approximately 2 kilometres east of Wanapitei Lake and 3 kilometres west of Kukagami Lake. This fire spans 0.1 hectares and is currently being held.
As of this update, there are 28 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region:
- 1 fire is being held
- 4 fires are under control
- 23 fires are being observed
Fire of Note:
- Kirkland Lake 5 (KLK005): This fire covers 889 hectares and is now under control. It is located about 5 kilometres north of Stull Lake, 5 kilometres southeast of McKee Lake, and roughly 80 kilometres west of Latchford.
Fire Hazard:
The fire hazard across the Northeast Region is generally low to moderate, with a high fire hazard area located northwest of Hearst.

Safety Reminders:
- No Drone Zone: Flying drones near forest fires is illegal and dangerous. It can jeopardize the lives of pilots, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Stay clear of forest fires.
- Stay Clear of Waterbombers: If you see waterbombers approaching a body of water, move close to the shore to allow them to scoop water safely. Waterbombers will not scoop if watercraft pose a safety risk.
