FORT FRANCES, ON – A single-vehicle collision on Highway 11 sent two people to the hospital, and has resulted in several charges for the driver, who was found to be impaired by alcohol.
On August 30, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Fort Frances responded to a crash about 40 km east of Fort Frances.
The vehicle involved had left the highway and collided with a rock cut. Both the driver and passenger were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon investigation, it was determined that the driver, Scott Kalauz, 33, from Winnipeg, MB, was impaired by alcohol. Breath tests were conducted at the hospital, confirming the impairment.
Kalauz was arrested and charged with several criminal offences:
- Impaired operation (alcohol and drug)
- Impaired operation (blood alcohol concentration 80 plus)
- Dangerous operation
- Uttering threats (death or bodily harm)
As a result, Kalauz’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was released and is scheduled to appear in Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on October 7, 2024.
