Impaired Driving numbers are up in Thunder Bay. What should be done?

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, August 30, 2024 – As Labour Day approaches, the risks associated with impaired driving are magnified, especially during holiday weekends. Across Canada, impaired driving remains a leading cause of road fatalities, with hundreds losing their lives and thousands more suffering injuries each year due to alcohol, cannabis, or drug-related crashes. In Northwestern Ontario, the numbers are equally alarming.

In 2023 alone, Thunder Bay recorded a significant number of impaired driving incidents, contributing to a region-wide problem. Statistics reveal that the city and its surrounding areas have some of the highest rates of impaired driving in the province, with incidents peaking during long weekends.

MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is once again raising the alarm, urging residents to prioritize safety and prevent tragedies on the roads, trails, and waterways this Labour Day.

“We want everyone to make it home safely after enjoying time with family and friends. Impaired driving is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous,” says Tanya Hansen Pratt, MADD Canada National President. Her message is particularly resonant as Thunder Bay grapples with its impaired driving statistics.

Local and Regional Impaired Driving Statistics

  • Thunder Bay: The city reported over 400 impaired driving incidents in 2023, with a notable spike during summer months and holiday weekends.
  • Northwestern Ontario: The region consistently ranks higher than the provincial average for impaired driving incidents per capita, with a concerning trend of increased occurrences during long weekends.

How to Stay Safe this Labour Day

MADD Canada is calling on all Northwestern Ontario residents to take proactive steps this Labour Day to prevent impairment-related crashes, deaths, and injuries:

  • Plan Ahead: Know how you’ll get home before the festivities begin.
  • Stay Sober Behind the Wheel: Whether driving a car, boat, or ATV, stay sober if you’re operating a vehicle.
  • Avoid Riding with Impaired Drivers: Never get into a vehicle with someone who is under the influence.
  • Report Impaired Drivers: Call 911 if you suspect a driver is impaired.
