FORT FRANCES, ON – A Thunder Bay man is facing impaired driving charges after refusing to provide breath samples during a traffic stop in Fort Frances on August 25, 2024.

At approximately 8:30 pm, a Fort Frances Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed a vehicle swerving on Scott Street, with visible signs of recent collision damage. The officer stopped the vehicle in the 700 block of Scott Street and determined that the driver was distracted by a handheld communication device, and alcohol was likely a factor in the erratic driving.

After failing an approved roadside screening test, the driver, identified as Alain TANGUAY, 46, was arrested. He was transported to the Fort Frances Detachment, where he refused to comply with further breath testing demands.

TANGUAY has been charged with impaired operation of a vehicle due to alcohol and drugs, as well as failure or refusal to comply with a demand. Additional provincial charges were laid for distracted driving, improper documentation, and failing to report a collision. His driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. TANGUAY is scheduled to appear in the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on October 21, 2024, to face the charges.
