In a continued effort to combat climate change and enhance biodiversity, Forests Ontario and Forest Recovery Canada have planted 2.7 million trees across Canada this season, with 35,000 in Sault Ste. Marie.

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Forests Ontario, along with its national branch, Forest Recovery Canada, has taken significant strides in conserving and expanding Canada’s forests. This season, the organization supported the planting of approximately 2.7 million trees across the country, contributing to the fight against climate change and the promotion of biodiversity. Among these, 35,000 trees were planted in Sault Ste. Marie, bringing the city’s total to 122,000 trees.

The 2.7 million trees planted nationwide this year include over 700,000 outside Ontario—a record achievement made possible through collaboration with all levels of government, individual and corporate donors, and new planting partners from coast to coast.

Jess Kaknevicius, CEO of Forests Ontario, emphasized the importance of these efforts amid the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. “Building strong relationships with partners across the country is vital to making a difference in communities nationwide,” she stated.

Peter Moddle, National Program Manager at Forests Ontario, highlighted the success of their collaborations, particularly in restoring ecosystems after natural disasters. “Connecting with local Indigenous communities, woodlot owners, and environmental groups has been essential in creating resilient forests,” Moddle said.

Forests Ontario’s programs make it easier and more affordable for communities to increase forest cover by reducing tree-planting costs. These initiatives ensure that the right trees are planted in the right places for the right reasons. For more information on how to get involved, visit www.forestsontario.ca.
