New Wildfires: On Tuesday, August 20, two new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region. As of this evening, there are 29 active wildfires in the region. Of these, 3 are not under control, 3 are being held, 1 is under control, and 22 are being observed.
- Chapleau 9 (CHA009): This fire covers 2 hectares and is not yet under control. It is located approximately 61 kilometers northwest of Timmins, on the west side of Groundhog River Waterway.
- Sudbury 27 (SUD027): This 0.3-hectare fire is also not under control. It is located on Little Trout Lake, about 14 kilometers south-southeast of Whitefish.
Fire of Note:
- Kirkland Lake 5 (KLK005): Located about 5 kilometers north of Stull Lake and 80 kilometers west of Latchford, this fire is currently 889 hectares in size and remains out of control. FireRanger crews, supported by helicopters with water buckets, are actively working on this fire. The latest perimeter details can be found on the province’s interactive map.
Fire Hazard Levels:
The fire hazard in the Northeast Region ranges from moderate to high in central and northern areas. However, the hazard is low east of Chapleau, in the northwestern section of The Shoals Provincial Park, and along the Highway 11 corridor.

Safety Reminders:
- No Drone Zone: Flying drones near forest fires is illegal and hazardous. Drones can endanger the lives of pilots, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Stay clear of forest fires.
- Waterbomber Safety: If you see a waterbomber approaching, move close to the shore to allow them to scoop water safely. Waterbombers will not scoop if watercraft are too close, creating a safety risk. Stay clear of waterbombers.
