CONSTANCE LAKE FIRST NATION: Chiefs and proxies from Nishnawbe Aski Nation’s (NAN) 49 First Nations re-elected Alvin Fiddler, of Muskrat Dam First Nation, as Grand Chief during the 42nd Keewaywin Conference today.

“I am honoured to have the support of NAN leadership, and look forward to continuing to serve as Grand Chief for the next three years. It is so important that together, with the other members of the Executive Council, we focus on the commitments made during this campaign period – especially ensuring that NAN as an organization is reflective of the needs and priorities of our member communities. There is much work to be done, and I congratulate my fellow Executive Council members – Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Bobby Narcisse and Mike Metatawabin – as we come together in unity to strengthen NAN,” said Grand Chief Fiddler. “I want to thank my wife Tesa, and our two children, Allison and Jace, for their unwavering support and love, and the support from everyone across the territory who spoke to me during my campaign. Their words resonated with me, and I will move forward with confidence that NAN can be the voice that all our communities need for a brighter future for all NAN citizens.

Three candidates for Deputy Grand Chief were acclaimed:

  • Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Marten Falls First Nation
  • Bobby Narcisse, Aroland First Nation
  • Mike Metatawabin, Fort Albany First Nation

Alvin Fiddler was first elected as Grand Chief in 2015 and re-elected in 2018. He was elected again in a 2023 by-election. Before serving as Grand Chief, he completed three terms as Deputy Grand Chief from 2003 to 2006, 2006 to 2009, and 2012 to 2015.

The Executive Council was sworn into office immediately for a three-year term. The Keewaywin Conference (August 13-15) continues Thursday.
