TORONTO – LIVING – This Saturday, August 17, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will be offering free rides to active members of the Canadian military and veterans in honour of Warriors’ Day.

The Warriors’ Day Parade, held annually in Toronto, has long served as a tribute to the sacrifices made by Canada’s veterans and soldiers. This year’s parade, taking place at the Canadian National Exhibition, will hold special significance as it commemorates the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) centennial and the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

“As we approach Warriors’ Day, let us remember and honour the sacrifices of our veterans and service members,” said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. “The TTC’s gesture of offering free rides to veterans and active members of Canada’s Armed Forces on Warriors’ Day is a small token of gratitude for their service and dedication.”

TTC Chair Jamaal Myers emphasized the transit commission’s longstanding support for the military, stating, “The TTC has a proud history of supporting the military, and it is our privilege to continue this tradition by providing free transit to current members of the Canadian Armed Forces in uniform, as well as war and peacekeeping veterans, on Warriors’ Day. This gesture is a small way for us to show our gratitude for all that our veterans and soldiers have done for our country.”

TTC CEO Rick Leary added, “In addition to offering free rides on all TTC vehicles, I am pleased to announce that the TTC Honour Guard will be proudly representing our organization in the annual Warriors’ Day Parade at Exhibition Place. This is a momentous occasion for us to show our respect and admiration for those who have served and continue to serve our country.”

On Saturday, military personnel and veterans can receive free rides on all TTC vehicles, including buses, streetcars, the subway, and Wheel-Trans, by presenting their service medals or ribbons. Additionally, one companion per veteran or service member will also be allowed to ride for free as a sign of support and appreciation.

Each year, the TTC honours the invaluable contributions of Canadian military personnel, veterans, and peacekeepers by offering free travel on both Warriors’ Day and Remembrance Day.
