THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – The wildfire situation in Northwestern Ontario is far less severe than in Alberta and British Columbia. No new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by early evening on July 29.

One fire was confirmed during the evening hours of July 28, following the previous update.

Sioux Lookout 14 (SLK014): This remote fire is located approximately 5.8 kilometres east of North Caribou Lake and 12.9 kilometres northwest of Opapimiskan Lake. The 60.0-hectare fire is currently being observed.

At the time of this update, there are nine active fires in the Northwest Region. Of these fires, one is under control and eight are being observed.

The wildland fire hazard ranges from low to high across the Northwest Region as of Monday evening. The hazard is primarily moderate to high in the Red Lake sector and northern ends of the Sioux Lookout and Greenstone sectors. The remainder of the region is under a mainly low hazard with some scattered pockets of moderate to high hazard through the Kenora sector and along the international border.

Help Fight Forest Fires: Stay Clear of Waterbombers!

When waterbombers approach a body of water, move close to the shore so they can perform their scoop safely. A waterbomber will not scoop from a lake or river if encroaching watercraft pose a safety hazard. Be safe, stay clear of waterbombers.
