Traffic Stop on Highway 11 Leads to Multiple Charges for Two Residents

(LONGLAC, ON) – Two individuals from Sioux Lookout and Copper Cliff are facing several charges following a traffic stop on Highway 11.

On July 12, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Greenstone Detachment observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 11 in Longlac. During the investigation, officers seized over $5,000 in Canadian currency and cannabis. Both the driver and the passenger were arrested at the scene and taken to the Greenstone Detachment.

Charges Against the Accused:

Hassan Assi, 27, of Sioux Lookout:

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime – Over $5000
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
  • Possessing fish that have been skinned so that species cannot be easily identified
  • Possessing fish that have been packed so that number cannot easily be counted
  • Speeding

Hassan Fawaz, 31, of Copper Cliff:

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime – Over $5000
  • Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possessing fish that have been skinned so that species cannot be easily identified
  • Possessing fish that have been packed so that number cannot easily be counted

Both accused were held for bail on July 13, 2024, and have since been released from custody. They are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on August 15, 2024.
