THUNDER BAY – NEWS — The driver involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision on Oliver Road in November 2023 now faces additional charges.
Incident Overview
On November 30, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Thunder Bay Police Service responded to reports of a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a sedan on Oliver Road near Highgate Road. The collision resulted in both vehicles ending up in ditches on opposite sides of the road. The sedan’s engine block was ejected and landed in the front yard of a nearby residence.
Injuries and Fatality
Emergency services extricated the lone occupant of the sedan and both occupants of the pickup truck, all of whom were transported to the hospital with serious to potentially life-threatening injuries. Tragically, one of the pickup truck occupants, identified as 79-year-old Russell Wanzuk, later succumbed to his injuries.
Enhanced Charges
Initial charges were laid against the sedan driver, Dallas Hiebert, in November 2023. Following an ongoing investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit, Hiebert, 29, appeared in court on June 11, 2024. He now faces enhanced charges, including:
- Impaired Operation Causing Death
- Dangerous Operation Causing Death
Hiebert continues to face charges of:
- Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm
- Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm
- Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)
