Ninth-Inning Heroics Propel Border Cats to Top of the League

Thunder Bay – SPORTS – Get set for this afternoon at Port Arthur Stadium as the Thunder Bay Border Cats return home for two games against the Duluth Huskies. The Cats are purring after taking another game from the cross-lake rivals.

Ty Brooks from the University of South Alabama delivered an electrifying ninth-inning triple to break a nail-biting 6-6 tie, sending Greg Lachance from the University of Illinois racing home for the winning run! The Thunder Bay Border Cats clinched their tenth win in 12 games this season with a heart-stopping 7-6 victory over the Duluth Huskies at Wade Stadium.

The Border Cats continue their reign at the top of the Great Plains East Division, now sharing the best record in the Northwoods League with the Wausau Woodchucks at an impressive 10-2!

Our hitting stars of the night? Greg Lachance, Kyle Morrison from Shelton State CC, and Lucas Terilli from Eastern New Mexico University all racked up two hits each, with Zane Skansi from Creighton University chipping in a crucial RBI double.

On the mound, Griffin Catto from Southern Illinois University was a hero in relief, improving his record to a perfect 3-0. The pride of Whitby, Ontario, Catto tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out two. The drama didn’t end there as Sean Heppner from the University of British Columbia faced a two-on, two-out situation in the bottom of the ninth. Heppner coolly struck out two batters to notch his third save of the season.

The excitement is far from over! The Cats and Huskies will head back to Thunder Bay to continue their six-game series on Sunday, with first pitch at Port Arthur Stadium set for 5:05 PM. Cole Poirrier from Nicholls State University, returning for his second year with the Cats, will be making his first start of the season.

And folks, we’ve got a special treat! Thunder Bay’s own hockey star Michela Cava from the PWHL Champion Minnesota will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

She’ll be available for autographs and pictures in the first base patio area.

Don’t miss out on Family Day at the ballpark with an unbeatable deal: 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 Pepsis, and 4 bags of Old Dutch Chips—all for just $49! Plus, kids can run the bases after the game. See you there!
