THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – As of Tuesday evening, one new wildland fire has been confirmed in the Northwest Fire Region. There are currently two active fires:

  • Kenora 9 (KEN009): A 0.1-hectare fire located approximately 2.0 kilometres north of Highway 17A, near the junction of Highway 596 and Olson Road.
  • Nipigon 4 (NIP004): A 1.6-hectare fire located near Calvert Lake, approximately 56 kilometres northwest of Geraldton.This fire is currently under control.

Wildfire Hazard Assessment:

The wildfire hazard is predominantly low across the Northwest Region, with pockets of moderate to high hazard spanning through the Fort Frances, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout sectors.

Important Reminders for Outdoor Burning:

  • Exercise caution when engaging in any outdoor burning activities. Consider alternative methods like composting or utilizing your local landfill for yard waste disposal.
  • If you must burn, adhere to Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.
  • Ignite fires no earlier than two hours before sunset and extinguish them no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • Ensure adequate tools and water are available to contain the fire.
  • Familiarize yourself with the complete Outdoor Burning Regulations to ensure safe practices.

Reporting Wildland Fires:

To report a wildland fire:

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Dial 310-FIRE.
  • South of the French or Mattawa Rivers: Dial 9-1-1.
