Wawa – NEWS – A local resident encountered the law twice in the span of a single night, resulting in charges of both mischief and impaired driving.
The Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was first called to Third Avenue shortly before 1:00 a.m. on March 7, 2024, following a report of mischief.
Initial Arrest for Mischief
The investigation led to the arrest of 34-year-old Marlee Panco of Wawa, who was charged with mischief under $5,000. Following this initial encounter, Panco was released from custody with a directive to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa on April 8, 2024.
Police, observing signs of alcohol impairment during the custody period, offered Panco a courtesy ride home, advising against driving.
Impaired Driving Arrest
Despite the warning, Superior East OPP officers observed Panco driving on Mackey Street shortly after 2:00 a.m.
Further investigation confirmed the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages, leading to a second arrest. This time, the charges included operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
Legal Consequences
Following the second arrest, Panco was once again released from custody with an April 8, 2024 court date.
The additional consequences included a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days, underscoring the serious repercussions of impaired driving.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the legal and safety implications of driving under the influence, as well as the diligent efforts of the Superior East OPP to ensure community safety through enforcement and intervention.
