Proud Boy Member Convicted for Jan. 6 Actions
Washington – Gabriel Augustin Garcia, a 42-year-old Florida resident and member of the Proud Boys’ Vice City Chapter, has been found guilty of felony charges for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach.
Charges and Investigation
Garcia faced charges of obstructing an official proceeding and interfering with law enforcement during a civil disorder. His membership in the Proud Boys and participation in their Telegram message groups were key evidence in the trial.
Events Leading to the Conviction
Garcia’s actions on January 6 were documented through videos he live-streamed on Facebook, as well as Capitol surveillance and body-worn cameras of the Metropolitan Police Department. He entered the Capitol and engaged with law enforcement, voicing hostile remarks and joining in the advancement further into the building.
Arrest and Sentencing
The FBI arrested Garcia on January 19, 2021, in Miami. His sentencing is scheduled for March 28, 2024, with the court considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
Ongoing Investigations
The FBI continues to investigate the Capitol breach, with more than 1,200 individuals charged nationwide, including over 400 for assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The public is encouraged to provide tips to the FBI.
