Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Claims Two Lives on Highway 17 near Nipigon

Nipigon, ON A tragic motor vehicle collision occurred on October 10, 2023, resulting in the loss of two lives. The Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) swiftly responded to the incident, which involved a passenger motor vehicle and a pickup truck. The collision took place around 20 kilometers east of Nipigon on Highway 17.

Swift Emergency Response

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Fire teams, in addition to the Nipigon OPP Detachment, quickly responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, both drivers involved in the collision were tragically pronounced deceased.

Temporary Road Closure and Ongoing Investigation

In the aftermath of the collision, the highway was temporarily closed to facilitate emergency response and initial investigations. However, all lanes have been reopened to traffic following the necessary procedures.

The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team, along with OPP Collision Re-Constructionists, are actively assisting in the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the collision and the circumstances leading to this unfortunate incident.

As this investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing inquiry.
