May Street Serious Assault Now Homicide as Victim Dies

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police Service’s Primary Response Unit were originally dispatched to a residential address in the 200 block of May Street North at about 7:45 pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 following reports of an assault that had recently taken place.

Paramedics from the Superior North EMS were also dispatched to the scene and were attending to an adult male victim when officers arrived.

Evidence at the scene indicated that a serious assault had taken place. Paramedics transported the victim to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment of his injuries.

At that time the injuries were considered serious, which led members of the TPBS’s Major Crime and Forensic Identification Units to become involved in an ongoing aggravated assault investigation.

On Thursday, June 2, Major Crimes Unit investigators arrested Raejon Raheem JOHNSON, 22, of Toronto, and charged him with Aggravated Assault. He was later released with conditions and a future appearance date for the charge of Aggravated Assault.

On June 12, 2022 the Major Crime Unit was notified that the victim had died as a result of his injuries related to the Aggravated Assault. A post-mortem examination was completed and reviewed.

As a result, this investigation is now a Homicide.

JOHNSON was arrested in Brantford, Ont., by members of the Brantford Police Service on Friday, June 17. Arrangements are being made to return to Thunder Bay on a charge of Second-Degree Murder.

The investigation is ongoing.
