THUNDER BAY – POLITICS – The Ontario New Democrats are firing shots at the Ontario Liberals as the “Northern Leader’s Debate” is set to get underway later today.

The New Democrats are hitting on the Liberals saying that while they have a platform for the North, the Liberals still don’t even have candidates in Kenora-Rainy River, Kiiwetinoong, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, four of Ontario’s important Northern ridings.

“It’s no wonder, because the Liberals are running on a record in the North no one would be proud of,” is the message from the NDP War room.

Highway medicine: The Liberals froze hospital budgets, creating a health crisis that forces Northern emergency rooms to close even now. Their doctor shortage means people must drive for hours for care in Toronto.

Higher costs: The Liberals let Hydro rates double and unrelagulated gas prices skyrocketed. Yesterday’s Liberal platform doesn’t even mention the high costs of Hydro and gas.

Cutting train service: The Liberals canceled the Northlander.

Indigenous rights: The Liberals fought Grassy Narrows First Nation in court over forestry and failed to clean up mercury poisoning in the Wabigoon River. They made no serious efforts to fix unsafe housing and contaminated drinking water.
