The Hoito – Thunder Bay’s World Famous Icon Ablaze

Thunder Bay – The historic Finlandia Club that housed the famous Hoito Restaurant on Bay Street is on fire this evening.

The Thunder Bay Police are requesting that the public avoid the area of Bay Street between Algoma and Secord while the Fire Department continues to battle the Finlandia Club fire. Excessive traffic is causing a safety hazard.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is on scene.

The smoke from the fire is billowing out southward from the Bay Street icon that has been under renovations with plans afoot for a re-opening of the historic Hoito Restaurant.

The building has been under renovation with condos being built.

The Condo developers state on their website, “This historical building is soon to be the home of Thunder Bay’s newest luxury condo living experience. Each unit boasts natural gas fired water boilers, geothermal heat pumps, new windows, and state of the art utilities. Finlandia residents will have access to a private walled in garden complete with outdoor kitchen, seating area and sauna.”
