It can be tough to stand out in the fashion industry. With so many garments to choose from, making your mark is difficult, especially if you want to get your designs on red carpets and worn by celebrities. Abby Kheir is the founder and CEO of Abyss by Abby, a daring dress company that has taken the world by storm.

Tell us about your business.

I opened my first clothing store back in 1999. The stores carried my clothes, as well as some of my favorites from other designers. I didn’t start designing my clothes, but when I saw a huge gap in the market for dresses for empowered women, I learned fashion design. That’s what led to Abyss by Abby. All of the dresses are designed by me, and I couldn’t be happier about the responses I’m getting about them from around the world.

Why do you think that celebrities are drawn to your dresses?

Bold women need bold dresses. I knew that when I created Abyss by Abby. It took a little while for our company to stand out. But since then, my designs have been worn by a wide variety of celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, Madison Beer, Eva Longoria, Khloe Kardashian, and Sofia Richie. I’m always excited to see one of my pieces, whether it’s on a red carpet or for a night out.

Do you credit anything besides your hard work to your success?

My father has been instrumental in my success. He always encouraged me to value my dreams and eliminate anything in my life that wasn’t moving me towards my goals. I have also been influenced by all the fashion designers who came before me, who mentored me by creating beautiful looks that inspired me to design clothes.

How do you show your employees that you value them?

I adore all of my employees, and I want to make working for me fun! One of my favorite things to do is to buy my employees designer handbags. They’re one of my ultimate vices, and I think everyone deserves to have at least one or two in their closet. When I learned that my assistant didn’t celebrate her birthday, I threw a big party. I also offer spa trips and first-class plane tickets to show them I care.
