Thunder Bay – WEATHER – The trip into the Arctic weather continues… Extreme Cold Warnings are out across Western Canada right from British Columbia all the way to Sault Ste Marie. There is a small band in Manitoba without warnings this morning.

It is -35°C in Thunder Bay, fairly close to the record cold of -38.9°C recorded on this day in 1951. The cold spot in Ontario this morning at 06:00 is -41.2 °C in Geraldton.

Remember! It is cold for you, it is also equally cold for your dog, cat, and livestock.

At these wind chill levels and cold temperatures, frostbite is possible in minutes.

A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected to continue.

Extreme wind chill values of -40°C to -45°C this morning are across the region. There will be some improvement during the afternoon as temperatures warm slightly, before temperatures fall again tonight. The extreme cold may continue for the remainder of this week with wind chill values approaching -40°C each night.

Thunder Bay Weather Outlook

It is very cold this morning in Thunder Bay. At 06:00 am EST skies are clear. There will be a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 percent chance of flurries this afternoon. Winds becoming west 20 km/h gusting to 40 late this morning. The high today will be -20°C. The wind chill feels like -45 this morning and will be more like -29°C this afternoon.

Tonight, the weather service is calling for partly cloudy skies with a 30 percent chance of snow flurries this evening. Winds up to 15 km/h. Low overnight will be -33°C. The wind chill will make it feel like -29°C this evening and -39°C overnight.

The City of Thunder Bay has cancelled its School Crossing Guard Service today, Tuesday, February 9, 2021, for the morning shift only due to extreme cold weather. Service is planned to resume for the afternoon shifts.

MORNING BUS CANCELLATION Due to extreme weather, all morning buses will be cancelled. -all schools will be open. -secondary students will go fully virtual. -p.m. buses will run for all elementary students. -p.m. buses will run for special needs students in secondary.

Greenstone – Geraldton

Skies are clear this morning and it is very cold at -41.2 °C in, headed to a daytime high of -23°C. The wind chill is at -48°C this morning and will be -28°C this afternoon. There will be a mix of sun and cloud rolling in this afternoon and there will be a 30 percent chance of flurries this afternoon. Winds becoming southwest 20 km/h late this morning.

Tonight, skies will be partly cloudy. There will be a 30 percent chance of snow flurries this evening. Winds up to 15 km/h. Low will be -34°C. Wind chill -31°C this evening and -40°C overnight.

Sachigo Lake Weather Outlook

It is -33°C in Sachigo Lake this morning. Skies are mainly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of flurries. Winds will be up to 15 km/h. The high today will be -24°C. Wind chill -43°C this morning and -34°C this afternoon.

Tonight will see partly cloudy skies with a 30 percent chance of flurries. Wind up to 15 km/h. The low overnight will be -35°C. Wind chill will be -33°C this evening and -41°C overnight.

Dryden and Vermillion Bay Weather Outlook

It is -30°C in Dryden and Vermillion Bay with the forecast calling for a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 percent chance of flurries. Winds will become west 20 km/h gusting to 40 this morning. The daytime high today will be -24°C. Wind chill -44°C this morning and -33°C this afternoon.

Tonight, the weather service is calling for partly cloudy skies with a 30 percent chance of flurries early this evening. Winds will be up to 15 km/h. The overnight low -33°C. The wind chill -33°C this evening and -39°C overnight.

Buses are cancelled today in the Red Lake/Ear Falls and Dryden/Vermilion Bay areas due to mechanical issues caused by the extreme cold.

Schools remain open. Buses will run in all other areas.
