Winter Weather Update

Winter Storm Warnings In Effect

Thunder Bay – WEATHER – 07:00 am EST Winter is going to make a showing today. There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect for Marathon to Schreiber, and a Winter Travel Advisory in effect from Nipigon to Rossport. Travel along the north side of Lake Superior will be impacted as far to the east as Batchawana Bay.

Weather Warning Snow

Snowfall warning in effect for:

    • Nipigon – Rossport
  • Marathon – Schreiber

Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 20 cm is expected by Thursday morning.

Lake enhanced snow will develop along the northern shore of Lake Superior this morning and spread to the eastern shore in the afternoon. This snow combined with moderate winds could result in blowing snow, reducing visibilities considerably.

Travel may become particularly hazardous along Highway 17 between Terrace Bay and Batchawana Bay.

A Winter Weather Travel Advisory in effect for today.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are expected by Thursday morning. Lake enhanced snow will develop along the northern shore of Lake Superior this morning and taper off overnight tonight.

Thunder Bay Weather Outlook

It is -21 this morning in the city. It will become cloudy cloudy this morning with periods of snow and local blowing snow with amounts of two centimetres expected. Winds will be southwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning. Today’s high will be -1. This morning with the wind it will feel colder the wind chill will be -27 this morning and 08 this afternoon.

Tonight snow will continue. There will be periods of snow and local blowing snow with another two centimetres possible. Winds will be from the west at 30 km/h gusting to 50 before becoming light before morning. The overnight low will be -3 with the wind chill near -8.

Greenstone – Geraldton Weather Outlook

It is -23 this morning in Geraldton under cloudy skies, heading for a high of -6. The forecast is calling for snow and local blowing snow to start late this morning. Snowfall amounts of 2 to 4 centimetres are expected. Winds becoming south 30 km/h gusting to 50 early this afternoon are in the weather forecast. The wind chill is -32 this morning and will be -12 this afternoon.

Tonight, the weather service says that snow and local blowing snow with amounts of up to five centimetres are expected. Winds will be lighter blowing at up to 15 km/h. The overnight low will be -10. The wind chill is going to be -10 this evening and -16 overnight.

Fort Severn / Washaho Cree Nation Weather Outlook

It is -20 this morning in Washaho. Skies are cloudy with a 40 percent chance of flurries. Winds will become southeast 20 km/h gusting to 40 this morning. The temperature will remain steady near -19 with the wind chill near -32.

Tonight conditions will remain the same, with cloudy skies and a 40 percent chance of flurries. Winds will be east 30 km/h. The temperature will remain steady near -20. Wind chill near -33. This means there is a risk of frostbite.

Kenora and Lake of the Woods Weather Outlook

It is -13 in Kenora this morning. The weather forecast is calling for periods of snow. Local blowing snow is expected by late this morning and early this afternoon. Snowfall amounts of two to four centimetres are likely. Winds will be from the southwest 20 km/h gusting to 50 becoming northwest 40 gusting to 70 this afternoon. It is going to warm up, the high for today will be h +1. The wind chill will feel like -24 this morning.

Tonight, expect periods of snow and blowing snow overnight. Another two centimetres of the white stuff is expected. Wind will be northwest 40 km/h gusting to 70. The overnight low will be -11. The wind chill -18 overnight.
