When it comes to card games, poker and blackjack are the two most popular ones in North America and not just Canada. With poker in focus, we are about to take a quick look through some of the popular variants of this historical card game.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is by far the most popular version of the game in Canada and the USA. Relatively easy to learn, Texas Hold’em poker gets more complicated as you progress in the game from a beginner to a pro. There are intricate strategies that get involved at this point and you can find entire guidebooks on such strategies. However, the first thing you need to do is memorise the poker hand ranking chart. Once you have memorised the chart, it will be useful for almost all variants of the game, and not just Texas Hold’em.

Omaha Hi

Not that different to Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi does differ in the number of hole cards dealt to each player. Instead of two hole cards like in Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi poker games are played after dealing 4 hole cards to each player.

Omaha Hi-Lo

There are two winners in Omaha Hi-Lo, as the total bet on the table is shared 50-50 by the two players with the highest and the lowest-ranked 5-card hands. It is a complex game and requires advanced-level understanding of the poker hand ranking chart. It is not popular, and neither is it easy to learn, but pros love it all the same!

7-Card Stud

A complex combination of some cards in each hand that are faced down and a few that are faced up, 7-card stud used to be more popular than it is today. Texas Hold’em stole the spotlight and today it is hardly played due to the complexities involved. There are no community or hole cards in stud poker, but each player always receives unique hands because of that.

2-7 Triple Draw

A 5-card hand takes over again in 2-7 triple draw poker, but there will be no visible, face-up cards at all. Also, being a low baller poker variation, your objective will be to make the lowest ranking total possible. The limit in most games is three draws. This version of poker is actually quite easy to learn and, as a result, popular as well.

5-Card Draw

Arguably the easiest version of poker to learn is the 5-Card Draw, which is why it is also one of the most played online and offline poker games today. There is just one round of draws and the player with the highest-ranked hand wins.

Note that you can try out any or all of the poker variations online as well. You don’t really need to wait until the traditional casinos reopen again because Gamble Online has already listed the best online poker sites Canada has to offer.
