THUNDER BAY – It was a wake-up call that will likely be remembered for a long time.

At 08:56 Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews were dispatched to a report of a lightning strike at the residence of 226 Dog Lake Road causing a structural fire.

First arriving fire crews could see smoke and fire coming from the building upon arriving at scene, and a second alarm was initiated.

A large blue flame was emanating from the side of the house being fed by the natural gas supply, and igniting the deck attached to the front of the house.  An aggressive initial attack by the first arriving crew quickly brought the fire under control thereby preventing the fire from extending into the home.

A total of 22 Fire personnel responded to the event. The damage was limited to the exterior of the home, occupants were not displaced, no injuries reported, and the cause was determined to be a lightning strike that ruptured the natural gas line.
